The 6 Pillars of Pilates

Originallly Developed by Jospesh Pilates

Pillar 1: Centering

  • Everything begins from the “powerhouse” – the core.

  • Includes the abdominals, lower back, hips, glutes, and inner thighs.

  • All movement should originate from this area to ensure stability and strength.

Pillar 2: Concentration

  • Mindful movement is key.

  • Full mental focus is required to execute each exercise with intention and control.

  • Quality over quantity.

Pillar 3: Control

  • Every movement should be deliberate.

  • Avoid momentum; use muscle activation to guide the body.

  • Prevents injury and maximizes effectiveness.

Pillar 4: Precision

  • Emphasize proper form and alignment.

  • Small details in posture and muscle engagement make all the difference.

  • Encourages body awareness and refinement.

Pillar 5: Breath

  • Deep, controlled breathing supports movement and oxygenates the body.

  • Helps activate the core and maintain rhythm.

  • In Pilates, exhaling often accompanies exertion.

Pillar 6: Flow

  • Movements should be fluid, not jerky or rushed.

  • Exercises link smoothly with transitions that maintain engagement.

  • Promotes grace and endurance.

Questions & Answers

What should I expect from a group Pilates class?

Each class is structured, inclusive, and focused on mindful movement.

Expect a guided warm-up, a series of targeted exercises focusing on posture, breath, and core control, and a mindful cool-down. The instructor will offer verbal cues and visual demonstrations, with modifications provided so you can move at your own level. You’ll leave feeling more connected, energised, and aligned.

How often should I attend group Pilates classes?

1–2 classes per week is ideal to build rhythm and see results.

Consistency is key. Attending regularly helps you build familiarity with the movements and improve coordination, flexibility, and strength over time. Even one well-focused class per week can make a difference when done consistently.

How quickly can I expect to see results?

Most clients feel stronger, more balanced, and more energised within 2–4 weeks.

As you keep attending, you'll notice improved posture, better core engagement, reduced tension, and greater body awareness. Progress is gradual but lasting — and you’ll likely feel it before you see it.

What’s the benefit of doing Pilates in a group setting?

You get expert guidance, shared energy, and supportive structure.

Group classes create a motivating environment with structured sessions led by a qualified instructor. You'll still receive clear instructions, posture cues, and modifications where needed — all while moving with others who are on the same journey.

Do I need to be fit, flexible, or experienced to join a group class?

Not at all — classes are designed for all levels.

Instructors provide modifications for beginners and variations for more advanced movers. Whether you're new to Pilates or returning after a break, you’ll be guided safely and progressively. Just show up — the rest is taken care of.

Is group Pilates right for me?

If you want to move better, feel stronger, and stay consistent — definitely.

Group Pilates is perfect if you’re looking for low-impact, full-body movement that improves posture, core strength, and body awareness. It’s also a great way to stay accountable and enjoy movement in a supportive, uplifting environment.

Hina is a professional and friendly instructor who truly cares about her clients. I have osteoporosis and back pain, so I was a little sceptical at first. However, I was put at ease from day one, and I feel an improvement in my body strength and flexibility. I look forward to my weekly sessions as they are made fun and challenging each time.
